From Diplomat in China to Contested Prelate: The Story of Bishop Georges Colomb

The life of a high-ranking Church official is rarely simple, but few stories take as many dramatic turns as that of Georges Colomb, the Bishop of La Rochelle. From a civil service career in France to clandestine missionary work in China, his trajectory has been extraordinary.
However, his long career in the Catholic Church is currently facing its darkest chapter yet. While he still officially holds his title as bishop, he has been suspended from all authority since June 2023 as he fights a serious criminal charge in the French legal system.
Here is a closer look at the complex life, career, and ongoing controversy surrounding Bishop Georges Colomb.

💼 An Unexpected Journey: From Post Office Inspector to the Seminary
Born on June 15, 1953, in Saint-Anthème, France, Colomb did not start his professional life in the priesthood. Instead, he initially aimed for the business world, earning a diploma in hotel management and studying law and economic administration.
His early career included a five-year stint in the French civil service, working as an inspector for Post and Telecommunications in Lyon and Nanterre.
Everything changed when he was 29. Deeply moved by the ongoing Vietnamese emigration crisis of the early 1980s, Colomb felt a profound spiritual calling. He left his government job, entered the Carmelite Seminary in Paris, and graduated with a degree in theology. On September 13, 1987, he was officially ordained a priest for the Paris Foreign Missions Society (MEP)—an organization dedicated to evangelization, particularly in Asia.

🌏 The "Foreign Expert" in China
Before heading east, Colomb moved to London to master English. He then spent two years in Taiwan studying Mandarin Chinese and Asian culture.
By 1990, he was living in the People's Republic of China. Because open Christian evangelization was strictly prohibited by the Chinese government, Colomb operated under the official title of "foreign expert," teaching French and French civilization at a Chinese university. His educational and cultural contributions were so significant that the French government awarded him the prestigious Palmes Académiques in 2007.

📈 Rising Through the Church Ranks
Upon returning to Paris in 1998, Colomb quickly climbed the leadership ladder within the MEP:
  • 1998: Elected to the Superior General's Council, managing vocations and young lay volunteers.
  • 2004: Elected Vicar General of the MEP.
  • 2010: Elected to a six-year term as the MEP’s Superior General.
His leadership caught the attention of the Vatican. On March 9, 2016, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of La Rochelle. His role expanded even further in 2020 when Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle named him the head of the Pontifical Mission Society for France.

⚖️ The Current Controversy and Suspension
The trajectory of Bishop Colomb’s career came to a grinding halt in May 2023. Church officials reported an allegation against him to civil authorities involving the attempted rape of an adult male dating back to 2013.
When the media broke the news of both civil and canonical investigations in June 2023, Colomb fiercely denied the allegations, calling them "slanderous" and threatening legal action against anyone repeating them.
To contest the charges through the legal system, Colomb requested that Pope Francis temporarily relieve him of his diocesan duties. Since June 22, 2023, his authority in La Rochelle has been exercised by another French prelate. The legal situation escalated further when French prosecutors filed preliminary criminal charges against him on November 17, 2023. As the legal process continues to unfold, his future within the Church remains entirely on hold.
