In the high-stakes world of professional ice hockey, a reliable goaltender is worth their weight in gold. For fans of Switzerland’s National League (NL), Joren van Pottelberghe is a name that commands serious respect.
As the star netminder for EHC Biel, van Pottelberghe has spent years proving he has the ice-cold composure and lightning-fast reflexes needed to shut down elite offenses. Born on June 5, 1997, his journey includes making history on the global draft stage and climbing to the very top of Swiss hockey.
Here is the story of the man anchoring the crease.

🐙 Making History with the Detroit Red Wings
Before dominating the Swiss elite league, van Pottelberghe caught the attention of scouts across the Atlantic.
In the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, the Detroit Red Wings selected him 110th overall. With that single pick, van Pottelberghe etched his name into the record books as the first Swiss player ever drafted by the iconic Red Wings franchise.

🧱 From Davos to Biel: Becoming an NL Powerhouse
After spending his development years in Sweden with Linköping HC, van Pottelberghe returned home to launch a highly successful pro career:
  • The HC Davos Debut (2016–2020): He broke onto the professional scene during the 2016–17 season with HC Davos, putting up a rock-solid .906 save percentage in his rookie year.
  • The Biel Era (2020–Present): Seeking a new challenge, he signed a two-year deal with EHC Biel in January 2020. He instantly transformed their defense, putting up an elite 2.23 Goals Against Average (GAA) and a stellar .921 save percentage during a breakout 2021–22 season. His stellar performance earned him a well-deserved two-year contract extension.

🇨🇭 The International Stage & Olympic Heartbreak
Van Pottelberghe has proudly worn the Swiss cross on his chest throughout his entire career. He represented Switzerland at the U18 World Championships and stood tall in net during back-to-back World Junior Championships in 2016 and 2017.
The absolute pinnacle of his international career seemed to arrive on January 18, 2022, when he was named to Team Switzerland’s roster for the 2022 Winter Olympics as the youngest player on the squad.
Tragically, fate took a cruel turn. Just before the games began, van Pottelberghe was diagnosed with COVID-19, forcing a heartbreaking medical exclusion from the Olympic tournament.
From a historic NHL draft night to anchoring a championship contender in Biel, Joren van Pottelberghe continues to prove that he is the future of Swiss goaltending.
