If you've ever driven down the Overseas Highway with the windows down, chances are you've tuned into WCNK (98.7 FM). Broadcasting straight out of Key West, Florida, this beloved radio station is the go-to source for country music across the Florida Keys.
Combining local flavor with national news programming from AP Radio, WCNK has a rich history of keeping the islands rocking. Here is a closer look at its journey.
🕰️ A Quick Look at WCNK's History
WCNK hasn't always been the station we know today. Over the past few decades, it has gone through a few identity shifts:
  • December 18, 1984: The station officially hits the airwaves for the very first time under the call sign WOZN.
  • August 23, 1996: The call sign changes briefly to WBKW.
  • November 18, 1996: Just a few months later, the station adopts its permanent and current call sign, WCNK.
💼 New Ownership, Same Island Spirit
The station recently entered an exciting new chapter. In February 2024, a major deal was reached when Florida Keys Media LLC agreed to sell the station.
The sale to Keys Country Media, LLC—a company headed by Michelle Weil—was officially finalized on February 17, 2025. Under this fresh leadership, WCNK continues to serve the local community with the best country hits and up-to-the-minute news coverage.
