Kütahya Convention

General Overview
The Convention of Kütahya (also known as the Peace of Kütahya), signed in May 1833, is the diplomatic agreement that officially brought an end to the First Egyptian–Ottoman War.
Core Terms of the Agreement
  • Ottoman Concessions: Following their military defeat, the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Mahmoud II was forced to cede the Vilayet of Syria (including the pashaliks of Aleppo and Damascus) and the strategic province of Adana (Cilicia) to Egypt.
  • Egyptian Commitment: In exchange for these extensive territorial expansions, the Egyptian forces led by Muhammad Ali agreed to withdraw all troops from Anatolia.
Historical Legacy

While the convention successfully halted immediate hostilities, it established a highly fragile peace. The underlying geopolitical tension and the Ottoman Empire's desire to reclaim lost lands eventually led to the outbreak of the Second Egyptian–Ottoman War in 1839.
