If you love professional wrestling and the dramatic intensity of lucha libre, one name stands out as a synonym for grit, charisma, and bloody battles: Pedro Aguayo Damián. Better known by his legendary ring names El Perro Aguayo (Aguayo the Dog) and El Can de Nochistlan (The Nochistlan Dog), this icon dominated the Mexican wrestling scene from the 1970s through the 1990s.
A massive box office draw and an incredibly fierce competitor, prominent wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer described Aguayo as "one of the hardest working and most charismatic wrestlers ever."
👑 A Historic Legacy and Unique Style
El Perro Aguayo’s in-ring style was an explosive mix of raw brawling and pure power—often described by pundits as a cross between Terry Funk and Bruno Sammartino.
- The WWF Pioneer: He made history as the very first WWF Light Heavyweight Champion, though WWE's official history does not include title reigns prior to 1997.
- The Ultimate Rival: He is permanently etched in fans' minds as the final major rival of the absolute cultural icon, El Santo.
- Hall of Fame: In 2012, his exceptional career was immortalized with his induction into the AAA Hall of Fame.
💥 From the UWA Rings to the Birth of AAA
As one of the greatest "heels" (villains) in lucha libre history, Aguayo was synonymous with the Universal Wrestling Association (UWA). In the 1990s, he took his career to the next level by helping found AAA (Asistencia Asesoría y Administración). His legendary three-way feud with Konnan and Cien Caras became one of the most financially successful programs in the industry.
In 1997, he even made a memorable appearance at the WWF Royal Rumble, sharing the ring with fellow lucha libre legends like Mil Máscaras.
A Generational Clash with "Los Capos"
After moving to CMLL, Aguayo initially headed into retirement after a high-stakes match against Universo 2000. However, the story didn't end there. When his son, Perro Aguayo Jr., sparked a brutal feud with the rival stable Los Capos, the patriarch stepped back into the squared circle. The family rivalry culminated in a dramatic double "hair vs. hair" (pelo contra cabellera) match. The Aguayos triumphed, shaving their opponents' heads and allowing the legendary father to officially retire on top.
🖤 Family Tragedy and Final Years
Pedro Aguayo's life was profoundly marked by heartbreak. His son, the highly popular Perro Aguayo Jr. (founder of the Los Perros del Mal stable), tragically died in the ring in 2015 at just 35 years old.
Four years later, on July 3, 2019, El Perro Aguayo passed away from a heart attack at the age of 73. His funeral took place in Guadalajara at the exact same location where he had said goodbye to his son years prior, surrounded by family, friends, and thousands of fans honoring the final legacy of the "Nochistlan Dog."
