The Gateway to Wakayama’s Onsens: Inside Nanki–Shirahama Airport

Tucked away in the scenic, hilly landscape of the Kii Peninsula lies a hidden gem of Japanese travel: Nanki–Shirahama Airport (SHM / RJBD). As the only airport in Wakayama Prefecture and the southernmost airport on Japan's main island of Honshu, this third-class airport serves as a vital, high-speed link to one of the country's most beautiful coastal regions.
If you are looking to bypass the crowds and head straight for white-sand beaches and historic hot springs, here is everything you need to know about this unique regional hub.

🛫 Pocket-Sized but Crucial: The Tokyo Connection
Don't let its size fool you. While it might not have dozens of international gates, Nanki–Shirahama Airport offers immense convenience for travelers coming from the capital.
  • The Main Route: Japan Airlines (JAL) operates three daily round-trips directly connecting Shirahama to Tokyo–Haneda Airport.
  • The Time Saver: Instead of a long train ride down the peninsula, a quick flight gets you into the heart of Wakayama in no time.

⏳ From Turboprops to Jets: A Quick History
Opened by the Wakayama Prefectural government in April 1968, the airport started small with a modest 1,200-meter runway. In its early days, it offered flights to Osaka, Nagoya, and Tokyo. Over time, regional transit shifted, and the Osaka and Nagoya routes were discontinued.
To future-proof the airport, a brand-new 1,800-meter runway was built on adjacent land in 1996 specifically to handle modern jet aircraft. That runway was later extended to 2,000 meters, ensuring smooth landings for commercial jets. Today, private management company Nanki-Shirahama Airport, Inc. keeps operations running smoothly.

♨️ The Tourist Advantage: Why Travel via SHM?
Geographically, the airport sits about 65 kilometers south-southeast of Wakayama City. Because the massive Kansai International Airport (KIX) opened closer to the city center in 1994, Nanki-Shirahama Airport pivoted to do what it does best: serve as a paradise portal for vacationers.
The airport drops you just 1.5 kilometers outside the center of Shirahama Town. This makes it the ultimate landing pad for tourists flocking to the famous Nanki-Shirahama Onsen resort area, Adventure World, and the rugged, sacred landscapes further south along the peninsula.
