When we look back at the second generation of K-Pop, the band CNBLUE stands out as a true powerhouse. Blending rock energy with idol appeal, they dominated charts across Asia. At the very center of their signature sound was Lee Jong-hyun, the talented lead guitarist and vocalist whose soulful voice and sharp guitar riffs helped define the band's golden era.
However, his journey from a decorated small-town athlete to a top-tier Hallyu star ultimately took a sharp turn, culminating in a highly publicized exit from the entertainment industry. Here is the full story of his rise, his multi-faceted career, and the controversy that brought it to an end.
🥋 From Judo Champion to Eric Clapton Disciple
Born on May 15, 1990, in Busan, South Korea, Lee Jong-hyun's early life wasn't initially focused on music. Before he ever picked up a guitar, he was a highly competitive judo athlete, even winning a prestigious gold medal in a local high school championship. However, after a lightning-fast defeat in a key match, he realized sports might not be his ultimate calling.
Turning his focus to the arts, he began learning piano and singing. Everything changed the day he watched a clip of British legendary guitarist Eric Clapton—inspired by the rock icon, he picked up the guitar and never looked back. Shortly after, a street talent scout spotted him in Busan, leading to an audition at FNC Entertainment alongside future bandmates Jung Yong-hwa and Kang Min-hyuk.
🎸 The CNBLUE Golden Era and Solo Success
CNBLUE officially burst onto the South Korean music scene on January 14, 2010, with their smash hit "I'm a Loner." Lee quickly established himself as a core creative force in the band, co-writing hit Japanese and Korean tracks like "Come On," "Blind Love," and "Lie."
His musical success quickly spilled over into solo endeavors:
- The "My Love" Phenomenon (2012): Written and sung by Lee for his debut drama soundtrack, this track reached #4 on the Gaon Digital Chart. It became the 34th best-selling song in South Korea that year, racking up over 2.1 million digital downloads and winning "Best OST" at the 2013 Seoul Music Awards.
- Romantic J (2013): A seasonal holiday collaboration with labelmate Juniel, yielding the popular duet "Love Falls."
- Solo Albums: He made a successful Japanese solo debut with Sparkling Night (2016), followed by Metropolis (2018), both peaking at #7 on the Oricon weekly album charts.
📺 Stepping Front and Center: The Acting Career
Lee Jong-hyun easily transitioned into a highly sought-after television actor, showcasing impressive versatility across multiple genres.
He made his official small-screen debut in the massive 2012 SBS weekend hit A Gentleman's Dignity as Collin Black, a role that won him the "New Star" accolade at the SBS Drama Awards. He went on to secure prominent roles in the vampire high-school romance Orange Marmalade (2015), the retro teen drama Girls' Generation 1979 (2017), and the OCN fantasy romance Evergreen (2018). Beyond scripted television, he captured viewers' hearts as a permanent cast member on the reality hit We Got Married alongside actress Gong Seung-yeon.
🛑 Controversies and Departure from CNBLUE
Lee’s career faced its first major hurdle in June 2016 when he was fined for insider trading involving FNC Entertainment stocks. While he apologized and held onto the stocks once he realized the legal implications, a much larger storm was on the horizon.
In March 2019, the entertainment industry was rocked by the Burning Sun scandal. Investigations revealed that Lee was a member of a private chatroom with singer Jung Joon-young, where Jung shared illicit, hidden-camera videos. Lee admitted to viewing the videos and engaging in inappropriate conversations that degraded women.
While he initially remained in the band while completing his mandatory military service, a subsequent backlash occurred in August 2019 after he sent inappropriate direct messages to a YouTuber. Acknowledging the public outrage, Lee officially departed from CNBLUE in August 2019, stepping away from the spotlight permanently.
