If you love absurdist comedy, 80s nostalgia, and pure cinematic chaos, then Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp needs to be at the top of your watch list. Released as an eight-episode Netflix miniseries at the end of July 2015, this satirical masterpiece serves as a prequel to David Wain’s 2001 cult classic film.
The brilliant punchline? The original actors—who were already too old to play teenagers in 2001—returned nearly 15 years later to play even younger versions of themselves. It’s hilarious, it’s chaotic, and it works perfectly.
🌟 A Mind-Blowing Ensemble Cast
One of the greatest achievements of First Day of Camp is its cast. Despite many of the original actors skyrocketing to Hollywood A-list status over the years, the entire ensemble returned for this summer camp reunion.
The legendary returning lineup includes:
- Elizabeth Banks as Lindsay
- Bradley Cooper as Ben
- Amy Poehler as Susie
- Paul Rudd as Andy
- Christopher Meloni as Gene
- Michael Showalter as Coop (who also hilariously portrays U.S. President Ronald Reagan!)
- ...and H. Jon Benjamin as Mitch, who famously transforms into a talking can of mixed vegetables.
As if that wasn't enough star power, the prequel introduced incredible new faces to the franchise, including Chris Pine as a reclusive rockstar musician, Jon Hamm as a lethal government assassin, Kristen Wiig as a snobby rival counselor, and Michael Cera as a frantic lawyer.
🎬 Toxic Waste, Musicals, and Camp Rivalries: The Plot
Taking place on the very first morning at Camp Firewood, the plot quickly spirals into glorious absurdity over its 8-episode arc. While theater directors Ben and Susie hire a pretentious Broadway director (John Slattery) to stage the staff musical "Electro-City", a dark government conspiracy unfolds in the background.
Counselors Greg and Beth discover that toxic chemicals are being illegally dumped in the woods. Their quest for the truth takes them all the way to a high-stakes government cover-up ordered by President Ronald Reagan himself. Throw in the preppy, wealthy rivals from nearby Camp Tigerclaw, and you have the perfect recipe for a spectacular, action-packed summer camp showdown.
🎥 The Production Miracle
Co-writers David Wain and Michael Showalter faced a massive logistical challenge: how to shoot a series with dozens of Hollywood's busiest actors. Filming kicked off in Los Angeles in January 2015, working tightly around everyone's crazy schedules. Rumors even swirled that Bradley Cooper had to shoot all of his scenes in a single day!
To make the release even sweeter, Netflix dropped a companion behind-the-scenes documentary, Hurricane of Fun: The Making of Wet Hot, giving fans a nostalgic look at the original 2001 movie set.
📈 Cult Legacy and Critical Acclaim
First Day of Camp was a massive hit with critics and fans alike, scoring a stellar 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised the show for delivering the exact brand of goofy, campy hijinks that fans of the original movie craved. John Slattery even scored a Critics' Choice Television Award nomination for his guest role.
The franchise's success didn't stop there. On the heels of this release, Netflix ordered a follow-up series, Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later, which dropped in August 2017 to fast-forward the camp crew into the 1990s.
Whether you're a hardcore fan of the original film or a newcomer looking for a laugh-out-loud comedy binge, First Day of Camp is a nostalgic, star-studded trip you won't want to miss.
