When you think of a "city," images of towering skyscrapers and gridlocked traffic probably come to mind. But out in the scenic landscapes of Lake County, South Dakota, sits a city of a completely different breed.
Meet Brant Lake, one of the newest and smallest incorporated cities in the United States.
With a population you can count on two hands (plus a few extra fingers), this tight-knit rural community has a fascinating story of how it officially put itself on the map.
🗳️ The Road to Becoming a "City"
For most of its modern history, Brant Lake wasn’t officially a town or city at all—it was classified merely as a "census-designated place."
That all changed on March 29, 2016, when the local community decided they wanted to take control of their own destiny. In a landslide 61–9 vote, the residents officially chose to incorporate. By the time the 2020 U.S. Census rolled around, Brant Lake was proudly sporting its official status.
📊 Brant Lake by the Numbers: A Unique Demographic Profile
The 2020 Census revealed some incredibly unique statistics about this tiny, 100% rural enclave:
- The Population: A grand total of 56 residents.
- The Demographics: The town skews heavily toward a peaceful, older crowd, boasting a median age of 61.3 years. Over 35% of the residents are 65 or older.
- The Household Dynamics: There are only 23 households in the entire city, but they are deeply rooted. An impressive 87% of them are married couples, and nearly 35% have children under 18 living at home.
- The Real Estate: Brant Lake has 40 housing units. While 42.5% of them are listed as vacant (likely beautiful seasonal lake cabins or vacation homes), the actual homeowner and rental vacancy rate sits at a perfect 0.0%. When people buy here, they hold onto it!
🏫 Life and Education in the Slow Lane
There are no bustling commercial districts or massive school campuses inside Brant Lake's borders. For education, local families are served by the nearby Chester Area School District 39-1, ensuring that the town's youth get a great education while enjoying the safety and tranquility of ultra-small-town living.
Brant Lake is proof that you don't need hundreds of thousands of people to build a meaningful community. Sometimes, all it takes is 56 neighbors, a beautiful South Dakota backdrop, and a shared dream to make something official.
