Aramco Team Series Reconfirms October Golf Tournament in Hong Kong
The Aramco Team Series (ATS) announced on Wednesday that it will proceed with its plans to hold the first golf tournament in Hong Kong in October. This decision comes after the government of the financial center agreed to temporarily lend back land to accommodate the competition.
On September 1, the Hong Kong government is scheduled to reclaim 32 hectares (79 acres) of the three-course Fanling golf complex when the tenancy expires. Out of this area, 9 hectares will be used to construct 12,000 public housing units. Consequently, eight holes on one course will come under government management. Initially, this change made the ATS reconsider hosting the event in the city, as the land played a crucial role in providing essential infrastructure for VIP guests and visitor experiences that are integral to its events.
However, last week, the government agreed to lend the land back to the Hong Kong Golf Club from mid-September until mid-November. This arrangement allows the Aramco tournament to take place in October, followed by the Hong Kong Open in November.
Victoria Jones, championship director of the Saudi-backed Aramco Team Series, expressed gratitude to the Hong Kong government for making the 32 hectares available. Jones emphasized the importance of maintaining these holes (on the 32 hectares) to the high standards required for a successful tournament execution.
The Fanling golf course, located near the mainland China border, covers 172 hectares and is Hong Kong's largest private course. Since its opening in 1911, it remains the oldest championship course in Asia and hosts annual international tournaments.
