ATP Recap: Alexander Zverev Triumphs in Sweden After a Thrilling Three-Set Battle

 

Fifth-seeded Alexander Zverev from Germany persevered against Slovakia's Alex Molcan with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to advance to the second round of the Nordea Open on Tuesday in Bastad, Sweden.


However, some of the other seeded players faced early exits. Austria's Sebastian Ofner staged a comeback to defeat the 6th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Slovak qualifier Jozef Kovalik caused an upset by beating the 7th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain 6-3, 6-4. Additionally, Argentina's Federico Coria took down the 8th-seeded Sebastian Baez in a tight match, ending 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5).


In a match between Swedish wild cards, Leo Borg, son of the legendary Bjorn Borg, secured his first ATP main-draw victory by defeating Elias Ymer with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win. Also successful on Tuesday were Italian Matteo Arnaldi, Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles, and Russians Pavel Kotov and Alexander Shevchenko.


EFG Swiss Open Gstaad


Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka was leading 6-1, 3-1 when Spanish sixth seed Roberto Carballes Baena withdrew from their first-round match due to injury on Tuesday in Gstaad, Switzerland.


Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, aims to become the first Swiss man to win the national open since Roger Federer achieved the feat in 2004.


Swiss wild card Dominic Stricker also advanced with a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) victory over Arthur Fils of France. Other players who progressed included Argentina's Facundo Bagnis and Pedro Cachin, Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas, and Peru's Juan Pablo Varillas.


Infosys Hall of Fame Open


Alex Michelsen went the distance to upset fifth seed and defending champion Maxime Cressy in an all-American first-round match in Newport, R.I., with a score of 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-5.


Cressy delivered 23 aces but struggled with 13 double faults. Michelsen saved all five break points he faced on his way to victory.


The 6th seed Max Purcell from Australia also suffered a defeat, as Dutch opponent Gijs Brouwer cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win. Four-time Newport champion John Isner, on the other hand, overcame Australian qualifier Alex Bolt 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.


Other players who advanced included South African Kevin Anderson (the 2021 champion), Steve Johnson, Ethan Quinn, and Australians James Duckworth and Li Tu.
