ATP Roundup: Tommy Paul Triumphs Against NCAA Singles Champion in Newport

 

Top-seeded Tommy Paul breezed through the second round of the Infosys Hall of Fame Open at Newport, R.I., defeating wild card Ethan Quinn with a score of 6-4, 6-2. Paul showcased his strong serving, firing six aces and winning an impressive 85.2 percent (23 of 27) of his first-serve points against Quinn, who is the reigning NCAA singles champion from Georgia. Up next, Paul will take on John Isner, who secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory over the eighth-seeded Corentin Moutet of France.


In other results, second-seeded Adrian Mannarino of France defeated Australia's Rinky Hijikata with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-4, while French No. 3 seed Ugo Humbert overcame Steve Johnson with the same score of 6-4, 6-4.


Moving on to the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad, Serbian qualifier Hamad Medjedovic delivered an impressive performance, defeating former World No. 3 Dominic Thiem with a score of 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. Despite nine double faults, Medjedovic managed to outplay Thiem with a 10-7 advantage in aces. Medjedovic's next challenge will be the fourth-seeded Yannick Hanfmann, who secured a hard-fought victory against Daniel Altmaier with a score of 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in an all-German matchup.


The No. 2 seed Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia also advanced, defeating Swiss wild card Dominic Stricker in a tight contest with a score of 7-6 (4), 6-1. Kecmanovic's next opponent will be Belgian qualifier Zizou Bergs, who emerged victorious against Austria's Jurij Rodionov in a marathon match with a score of 7-6 (8), 4-6, 7-6 (4).


Turning to the Nordea Open, No. 3 seed Lorenzo Musetti faced a tough challenge from fellow Italian Matteo Arnaldi, eventually prevailing with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (6). Musetti needed seven match points in the third set to secure the win. In the next round, he will take on Austrian Filip Misolic, who triumphed over Slovakia's Jozef Kovalik with a score of 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 in a battle between qualifiers.


Defending champion and fourth-seeded Francisco Cerundolo had a convincing victory over Frenchman Luca Van Assche with a score of 6-2, 6-3. Cerundolo's upcoming opponent will be fellow Argentine Federico Coria, who defeated Swedish wild card Leo Borg with a score of 6-4, 6-2.
