ATP Roundup: Tommy Paul Triumphs Over NCAA Singles Champion in Newport
Top-seeded Tommy Paul delivered six aces on his way to a comfortable 6-4, 6-2 victory over wild card Ethan Quinn in the second round of the Infosys Hall of Fame Open at Newport, R.I.
Paul dominated the match, winning 85.2 percent (23 of 27) of his first-serve points against Quinn, the reigning NCAA singles champion from Georgia. In the next round, Paul is set to take on John Isner, who secured a 6-3, 6-4 win over eighth-seeded Corentin Moutet of France.
Moving on to other matches in the second round, second-seeded Adrian Mannarino of France triumphed over Australia's Rinky Hijikata with a score of 6-3, 6-4. French No. 3 seed Ugo Humbert also secured a straight-set victory of 6-4, 6-4 against Steve Johnson.
Further progress was made by No. 4 seed Mackenzie McDonald, No. 7 seed Jordan Thompson of Australia, Alex Michelsen, and South African wild card Kevin Anderson. Notably, Kevin Anderson returned from retirement to resume his playing career.
EFG Swiss Open Gstaad
In the second round at Gstaad, Switzerland, Serbian qualifier Hamad Medjedovic outplayed former World No. 3 Dominic Thiem and secured a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 victory.
Medjedovic had a slight edge over Thiem, recording ten aces and overcoming nine double faults. In the next round, he will face fourth-seeded Yannick Hanfmann, who emerged victorious in an all-German affair against Daniel Altmaier with a scoreline of 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
No. 2 seed Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia also advanced after defeating Swiss wild card Dominic Stricker 7-6 (4), 6-1. His next opponent will be Belgian qualifier Zizou Bergs, who persevered through a tough battle against Austria's Jurij Rodionov with a 7-6 (8), 4-6, 7-6 (4) win.
Nordea Open
In the second round at Bastad, Sweden, No. 3 seed Lorenzo Musetti secured a hard-fought victory against fellow Italian Matteo Arnaldi with a scoreline of 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (6).
Arnaldi showed resilience by saving 8 of 12 break points and recovering from a 4-1 deficit in the final set, posing a threat to Musetti. In the upcoming round, Musetti will face Austrian Filip Misolic, who defeated Slovakia's Jozef Kovalik in a battle of qualifiers with a score of 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4.
Defending champion and fourth-seeded Francisco Cerundolo emerged victorious with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Frenchman Luca Van Assche. Cerundolo's next challenge will come from fellow Argentina native Federico Coria, who defeated Swedish wild card Leo Borg 6-4, 6-2.
