Point of No Return: Ronaldo Shuts the Door on a European Comeback
Cristiano Ronaldo stated that he has no intention of playing club football in Europe again and believes that the Saudi Arabian league surpasses Major League Soccer, which is where his long-time rival Lionel Messi has chosen to continue his career.
After departing from Manchester United, Ronaldo joined Al Nassr in December on a 2-1/2 year contract. He expressed that his move to the Saudi team has opened doors for other top players to sign with Saudi clubs, and he expects more players to make the transition to the desert kingdom.
In a post-match interview following Al Nassr's 5-0 loss to Celta Vigo in a pre-season friendly on Monday, the 38-year-old Portugal captain voiced his belief that most European leagues are currently experiencing a decline in quality. He firmly asserted that he will not return to any European club, citing his age as a factor.
Ronaldo praised the English Premier League as the only European league still maintaining a high level of competitiveness. However, he emphasized that the Saudi league is superior to Major League Soccer.
Lionel Messi, who was once rumored to join a Saudi Arabian club, eventually signed with MLS side Inter Miami, committing to a deal until 2025.
Ronaldo confidently predicts that more top players will follow suit and join Saudi Arabia's league in the coming year. Notably, players like Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema from Real Madrid and N'Golo Kante from Chelsea have already made the move, joining champions Al-Ittihad in the Saudi league.
