R&A Embraces LIV Merger and Awaits Progress
On Wednesday, the Chief Executive of the R&A, Martin Slumbers, expressed his appreciation for the partnership agreement between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf. The three organizations recently merged into one unified commercial entity to put an end to their year-long dispute that had divided the sport.
"We are eager to see how this agreement between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV, announced on June 6, unfolds and how it will impact the broader golfing community," Slumbers stated during a press conference. However, he made it clear that the R&A is not directly involved in the agreement and emphasized that there are still many aspects to be clarified.
As one of the governing bodies of golf, along with the United States Golf Association (USGA), the R&A is responsible for matters like the rules of the sport but operates independently from the professional Tours. Slumbers mentioned that while the R&A is keenly observing the developments of the merger, their primary focus remains on successfully organizing championships, governing the sport in its best interests, and encouraging more people to play golf.
Regarding the atmosphere surrounding the 150th Open at St Andrews last year, Slumbers acknowledged that it was tense and disappointing to witness much of the attention being diverted away from the historic championship due to the ongoing dispute.
Slumbers was asked about potential disruptions from "Just Stop Oil" protesters during the 151st British Open at Hoylake. He responded cautiously, stating that although there was no direct intelligence indicating a threat, they have established significant security measures and are collaborating with law enforcement agencies to ensure safety during the event.
Players have been advised not to engage in any incidents, and Slumbers stands by this advice, assuring that they have adequate measures in place to handle any potential disruptions.
The 151st British Open at Hoylake is scheduled to begin on Thursday.
