Unfortunate Fan Struck by Rahm's Wild Tee Shot
Spanish golfer Jon Rahm made a lighthearted remark about the potential danger of golf balls acting as projectiles when asked how he would handle protesters disrupting the Open. Interestingly, his words turned out to be somewhat prophetic during the tournament.
Despite the absence of protests, an unfortunate spectator was accidentally struck by Rahm's off-target tee shot on the 12th hole. The ball hit the spectator on the head and bounced into a bunker. Concerned about the fan's well-being, Masters champion Rahm went to check on him before attempting to play his ball from the tricky lie in the bunker.
During the Open, Rahm is often accompanied by chants of "Rambo" from the crowd. After spending several minutes speaking with the dazed but conscious spectator, he even offered the individual a signed glove before resuming his round.
Although Rahm struggled in his opening round and made a bogey, he had to deal with the potential threat of Just Stop Oil protesters who had previously targeted other major sporting events, like Wimbledon, where they scattered jigsaw pieces and ticker-tape on the court.
Players had been advised not to take matters into their own hands if protesters interrupted the course, although Rahm humorously admitted that he hadn't read the memo. He playfully mentioned his reputation, hoping the protesters wouldn't catch him on a bad hole.
In light of the situation, Rahm emphasized that getting hit by a golf ball, whether intentional or accidental, would be a situation to avoid at all costs.
