A's Secure Victory Against Red Sox with 3 Home Runs

JJ Bleday, Cody Thomas, and Jace Peterson each hit two-run home runs as the Oakland Athletics secured a rare series win by defeating the visiting Boston Red Sox 6-5 on Wednesday afternoon. The bullpen held strong, not allowing an earned run over the final 4 2/3 innings.

Lucas Erceg, Angel Felipe, Sam Long, and Trevor May protected the slim lead after the A's stopped scoring following the fourth inning. This helped the hosts beat Boston for the second consecutive day, breaking an eight-game losing streak.

The home runs by Bleday, Thomas, and Peterson came in the first, second, and fourth innings, respectively, against Red Sox starter Brayan Bello (7-6). This power display allowed Oakland to quickly overcome a 2-0 Red Sox lead, which was the result of a two-run, first-inning homer by Justin Turner, and turn it into a four-run advantage.

Boston managed to cut the deficit in half during the fifth inning with a Rob Refsnyder RBI single and Turner's run-scoring groundout, leading to Athletics starter Ken Waldichuk being taken out of the game.

Two of Oakland's four errors led to the Red Sox gaining another run in the sixth inning. However, Felipe struck out Connor Wong and Triston Casas with the potential tying run at second base.

Felipe (1-0) had a flawless seventh inning, and Long replicated the same in the eighth, setting the stage for May, who pitched around a one-out walk in the ninth to secure his eighth save.

Cody Thomas had a remarkable day, hitting his first career home run in his 45th plate appearance. Angel Felipe earned his first big-league win in just his fifth outing.

Waldichuk was charged with four runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings, with three walks and five strikeouts.

Bello took the loss, being pulled after allowing all six Oakland runs and five hits in four innings. He walked two and struck out three.

Bleday, Thomas, Tony Kemp, and Jordan Diaz each had two hits, while Peterson scored twice for the A's, who started a 10-game homestand after the All-Star break by getting swept in a three-game series by the Minnesota Twins.

Justin Turner finished with three RBIs, Rob Refsnyder scored two runs, and Adam Duvall recorded two hits for the Red Sox, who were outhit 10-6 in the game.
