Wilmer Flores Smashes 2 Additional Home Runs as Giants Triumph Over Reds 11-10
Wilmer Flores had an impressive performance, hitting two home runs and driving in five runs, guiding the San Francisco Giants to their seventh consecutive victory with an 11-10 triumph in a high-scoring battle against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night.
This achievement followed Flores' outstanding display in the completion of Monday's suspended game, where he notched two doubles and a home run, and Joc Pederson delivered the go-ahead run in the 10th inning, resulting in a 4-2 victory for the Giants.
Flores' incredible performance in both games amounted to 16 total bases, making him the first Giants player since Barry Bonds in 2002 to achieve at least eight total bases in consecutive games.
In the second game, Scott Alexander (6-0) secured the win by striking out three batters and allowing only one hit in the sixth inning. Camilo Doval, who previously saved the suspended game, added to his impressive record with his 30th save out of 32 chances in the second game, the most in the major leagues. He shut down the Reds in the ninth inning, inducing a game-ending double play from Spencer Steer with runners on first and second.
The Reds, despite hitting four home runs, including Joey Votto's 350th career home run, suffered their sixth straight loss, marking their worst streak of the season.
The game was not without its challenges, as it was delayed for 71 minutes due to heavy rain showers that flooded the outfield and infield warning tracks, adding to the excitement and intensity of the matchup.
Flores continued his hot streak in the second game, hitting home runs in his first two at-bats against Cincinnati starter Luke Weaver.
The Reds briefly led 4-1 after two-run homers from Jake Fraley and Will Benson, their largest lead in recent games.
Unfortunately for Weaver, he was forced to leave the game after being struck by a line drive from Michael Conforto, resulting in a large welt above his left elbow.
The Giants rallied and took a 7-5 lead by scoring three runs off reliever Derek Law, with Mike Yastrzemski's two-run double standing out as the tiebreaker.
However, the Reds didn't back down and regained the lead at 8-7 when Christian Encarnacion-Strand launched a 426-foot homer to the upper deck in left field, scoring Elly De La Cruz and Matt McLain. This marked Encarnacion-Strand's first major league hit and snapped the Reds' 0-for-28 drought with runners in scoring position.
Flores once again played a pivotal role, tying the game with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. The Giants continued their offensive onslaught, scoring three more runs in the seventh off relievers Buck Farmer (2-4) and Tony Santillan, with Luis Matos' two-run single extending their lead to 11-8.
