Ryne Nelson and the Diamondbacks Dominate the Braves

On Wednesday night, Ryne Nelson pitched seven innings, allowing two runs and three hits to lead the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-3 victory against the Atlanta Braves.

Nelson (6-5) recorded five strikeouts and only one walk as Arizona secured their second consecutive win in the three-game series.

Contributing to the Diamondbacks' success, Nick Ahmed had two hits and two RBIs, while Christian Walker also delivered two hits and scored two runs. This win followed their 16-13 series opener victory against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday, after having been swept by the Toronto Blue Jays immediately following the All-Star break.

Marcell Ozuna and Austin Riley both hit homers for the Braves, but unfortunately, their efforts weren't enough to turn the tide, as they suffered their fourth consecutive loss since winning their first game after the All-Star break.

Starting pitcher Charlie Morton (10-7) of the Braves allowed four runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four batters and walked three during the game.

In the second inning, Morton gave up a leadoff double to Christian Walker. Later in the inning, Gabriel Moreno hit a ground ball down the right field line that deflected off the glove of right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. and went into the stands, resulting in a ground-rule double and a 1-0 lead for the Diamondbacks.

However, Marcell Ozuna responded for the Braves in the bottom half of the inning with an opposite-field home run to right, tying the score.

In the Arizona third inning, a single and back-to-back two-out walks loaded the bases. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. then hit a line-drive double down the left field line, bringing in two runs and giving the Diamondbacks a 3-1 lead.

After settling in, Morton retired nine consecutive batters before Evan Longoria walked with two outs in the sixth. Gabriel Moreno followed with a single, putting runners on the corners.

Morton remained in the game after a mound visit, but Nick Ahmed came through with a line-drive double into the left field corner, extending the Diamondbacks' lead to 4-1, and ending Morton's day on the mound.

In the seventh inning, Austin Riley's home run cut the Braves' deficit to 4-2.

The Diamondbacks added another run in the eighth inning when Ozzie Albies, the Braves' second baseman, was unable to field a grounder up the middle by Nick Ahmed, allowing Christian Walker to score from second and giving the Diamondbacks a 5-2 lead.

In the ninth, the Braves managed to score a run on a wild pitch, bringing the score to 5-3, but Kevin Ginkel got Sean Murphy to ground out, ending the game and securing his second save of the year for the Diamondbacks.
