Francisco Alvarez (2 HRs) Leads Mets to Narrow Victory Against White Sox
On Tuesday night, Francisco Alvarez powered the host New York Mets to an 11-10 victory over the Chicago White Sox with a pair of two-run homers.
The Mets have now won two consecutive games, bouncing back from a four-game losing streak. Meanwhile, the White Sox had their two-game winning streak snapped and now hold a 4-8 record for the month.
Brett Baty and DJ Stewart also contributed to the Mets' success with their own home runs. Jeff McNeil went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Tommy Pham had an RBI double and scored three times. Francisco Lindor hit a run-scoring double, and Pete Alonso added a sacrifice fly.
For the White Sox, Yasmani Grandal impressed with a homer and three RBIs, and Jake Burger had two doubles and three RBIs. Despite trailing 11-4, the White Sox managed to score five runs in the seventh inning. Tim Anderson was 3-for-5 with a run-scoring double.
Grant Hartwig (2-1), the Mets' first reliever, earned the win after giving up two runs in 1 2/3 innings. In the ninth, David Robertson walked two batters and allowed Andrew Benintendi's RBI single but eventually secured his 13th save.
The Mets' starting pitcher, Carlos Carrasco, gave up four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five over 4 2/3 innings. On the other side, White Sox starter Lucas Giolito (6-6) allowed eight runs on six hits and five walks with five strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings.
The Mets dominated early, scoring five runs in the first inning. Pham's RBI double and Alonso's sacrifice fly set the stage for Alvarez and Baty to hit consecutive two-out homers.
Grandal's home run in the second inning gave the White Sox a response, but Lindor's two-out RBI double in the bottom half kept the Mets ahead.
In the third inning, Anderson's RBI double added another run for the White Sox. However, the Mets extended their lead to 8-2 in the fourth inning, thanks to Stewart's leadoff homer and McNeil's first RBI single.
The White Sox fought back in the fifth inning with Andrew Vaughn's run-scoring groundout, followed by Burger's RBI double that led to Carrasco's exit.
In the sixth inning, McNeil's two-out RBI single further strengthened the Mets' position before Alvarez's second homer.
In the seventh inning, the White Sox made a valiant effort, sending 10 batters to the plate against three Mets relievers. Burger hit a two-run double, and Grandal followed with a two-run single before scoring from third on a passed ball charged to Alvarez.
