Gold Coast Steps Up to Host 2026 Commonwealth Games Following Victoria's Withdrawal
On Thursday, Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate expressed that his city could potentially take on the responsibility of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games. This comes after Victoria withdrew from hosting the quadrennial multi-sport event due to anticipated cost overruns. Victoria Premier Dan Andrews mentioned that the Games, originally planned to be held in four regional hubs, could cost over A$7 billion ($4.78 billion), surpassing the initial budget of A$2.6 billion.
Mayor Tate informed Australian media that the Gold Coast, having already hosted the Games in 2018, possesses the necessary infrastructure to successfully organize the event. He emphasized that he has more information and facts about the budget and feasibility, making him confident that the Games could be managed effectively.
The Gold Coast, located south of Brisbane, which is set to host the 2032 Summer Olympics, would require additional funding from the government of Queensland for this proposal. Nevertheless, Tate believes that they have met all the necessary requirements to gain approval for taking on the Games.
Athletics Australia supported the Gold Coast's bid, stating that the city showcased its ability to host an exceptional Games in 2018, leaving a lasting impact on Australian sport. They believe that this opportunity could benefit athletes preparing for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and thus, the Gold Coast is in a unique position to maintain the spirit of the Commonwealth Games.
Australia, the most successful competing nation in the Games' history, has previously hosted five of the 22 editions.
